Resource | Distribution

Distribution is the process for getting books into bookstores. It is the biggest hurdle that many self-published authors face, and a major reason that some authors choose to work with a traditional publisher.  More and more places exist where books can be sold (online, specialty shops, trade fairs, grocery stores, chain stores, etc) but getting your book into bookstores across the country remains one of the major goals of most authors.

Many of the books sold in bookstores get there through one of two major wholesalers in the United States: Ingram Book and Baker & Taylor.  All publishers and other distributors have their books available through these two wholesalers. It is difficult or impossible for self-published authors with less than ten titles to get listed directly with either Ingram or Baker & Taylor.

To compete with the distribution networks of large publishing houses, many distribution companies have formed to represent groups of smaller and independent publishers, including self-publishers.  Almost every book represented by a distributor will be listed with Ingram and Baker & Taylor. By pooling resources these companies can offer strong marketing and sales performance.  Many distribution companies specialize in specific genres (e.g. cookbooks, sports, Christian books, etc.)

Getting listed with a distributor can be a complicated and competitive process.  The distributor has to believe they can make money on the investment they give to promoting your books to bookstores and wholesalers. Here are some examples if you are beginning your research for a distributor.

Another option for getting listed with Ingram is to connect with one of the printing companies that includes fulfillment and listing with Ingram as part of its services. A few examples are listed here.

Best wishes in connecting with a distributor to give you access to bookstores.  Because of the high discounts needed for distribution services you may still want to consider fulfilling books directly through your website to maximize profits on those orders that come straight to you. Click here to learn about fulfillment options directly on your American Author website.
