Tools and Techniques - Cleaning Word Processor Text

Would you have written your book if you did not have your word processor?  Word processing is such a part of my writing I can hardly imagine producing a book without my computer.

Tip:  Easily clean your word processor text before you add it to your website.

You can add all the word processor text you wish to your website. You can add your entire book if you want. But you should clean the text before you add it to your site. Cleaning is needed because word processors like Microsoft Word add extra behind-the-scenes coding as you create a new page. If you forgot to clean out this extra code it may interfere with how you format your website page.  As I visit author sites I see some of us are forgetting this step.  Here are the instructions.

  1. Copy the text from your word processor.
  2. Open up your website control panel page.  Click where you want the text to appear.
  3. Click on the clipboard icon that has the W on it. This icon is in the top row of your page editor controls, the eighth one from the left.
  4. Press the Control Key on your computer and at the same time press V
  5. Your text is now cleaned.  Press ok and the text will appear on your website.
  6. The formatting may change during this process, so check and reformat as needed.

What if you already added text to your website without first cleaning it?

No problem.  Go back to the control panel and open the page where you have uncleaned text.  Cut this text off the page, then do the steps above to clean this text and reinsert it onto the page.

Uncleaned text often interferes with website formatting tools.  Cleaning your text is a simple but valuable step to creating consistent formatting on your website.
