| The Basics - Submitting your site to search engines.
There are dozens and dozens of search engines, yet the vast majority of website visitors use either Google, Yahoo, or MSN to search. If you have a brand new website, you want to manually list your site once with Google, Yahoo, and MSN. Repeated submissions will not add to your ranking.
If you haven’t already registered a domain name for your website, you’ll need to register a name before you can submit it to search engines. (In your website control_panel click on the Domain Names tab. You can also watch a video about registering domain names.)
List with Google: 1. Go to http://www.google.com/addurl/ 2. When the page appears, enter your URL, (your website name) 3. When you’re ready, click Add URL
List with MSN: 1. Go to http://search.msn.com/docs/submit.aspx?FORM=WSDD2 2. Enter your URL 3. When you’re ready, click SUBMIT URL
List with Yahoo: 1. Go to http://search.yahoo.com/info/submit.html 2. Click on SUBMIT YOUR SITE FOR FREE 3. Sign in to Yahoo. If you’re not registered, you’ll either have to register yourself for free, or ask a friend with a Yahoo account to submit your site. 4. Enter your website domain name and click on SUBMIT URL
Remember: 1. Submitting your site may get you indexed more quickly with the search engines, but even without submitting, these search engines will find your website. 2. You can check if your site is on a search engine by typing in www.yourdomainname.com and seeing if it shows up. 3. There are paid services that will submit your website to other search engines. This has limited value for most situations. 4. If you’re indexed with the top 3 search engines, other smaller engines will probably find and index you automatically. If you want to list with specific search engines, go to the engine and type in Submit Website URL. 5. There is no advantage to submitting your site more than once to each search engine.
In future tips, we’ll discuss how external links, meaningful content, and website traffic combine to raise your website rankings.
